Mainly by making critical textual analysis, this thesis tries to present Lawrences changing concepts on the issue of gender relation, with his representative works discussed in the three main stages of his thought alternation.

In the first chapter of this thesis, Lawrences preferences to sexuality are observed. Illustrated are Lawrences pro-feminism viewpoints shown in his pre-War novel Sons and Lovers and the
possible factors that have attributed to the formation of his views of female superiority. And then discussed is Lawrences most criticized periodthe phallus centrism period. Based on Kate Milletts Theory of Sexual Politics, which argues that Coitus can scarcely be said to take place in a vacuum [] it serves as a charged microcosm of the variety of attitudes and values to which culture subscribes (Millett, 2000:23), the focus of this part is Lawrences novel Women in Love with his advocacy of masculine power and male supremacy. The third part of this thesis deals with Lawrences gender concepts in his last years and explores the harmonious man-woman relationship in the analysis of Lady Chatterleys Lover.

Adopting Michel Foucaults Theory of Sexuality, Discourse and Power, this thesis attempts to demonstrate that Lawrences changing values on gender relation have certain historical and social reasons and limitations, instead of being regarded as simply senseless and radical.
