Oral Test: (10 points)
? Work in a group of 3. Choose either Group A topics (Unit 2, 4, & 5) or Group B
topics (Unit 3, 4 & 7). Work with your group members to prepare a 5-minute discussion on each of the three topics. Monologs are not allowed.
? On the test day, you will pick a topic by drawing a lot and then conduct a

Jian an: Hi, ChenCheng, Good morning.
ChenCheng: Hi, Jianan, morning.
Jian an: Why do you look a little tired?
ChenCheng: Yes, I came here by subway just now. But there are so many people in the compartment of the trains. It takes me much energy to plunge into the crowd.
Jian an: Yes. Truly, China has the largest population in the world, especially from 1980s. the rising life expectancy and declining fertility rates, China has become one of the aging society in the world. Do you think so?
ChenCheng: Yes. Most of elder people in China cant enjoy their golden years because of some social problems, such as the welfare problem, pension problem, and so on.
Jian an: Yes. Agree with you. I know someone who take a little pension after retirtment, living a hard life. I think our government should strengthen the elderly welfare system and perfect the pension funds.
ChenCheng: Elder people cannot enjoy their golden years without enough money. They cannot travel, go to theare, watch a movie and so on.
Jian an: In most of Chinese family, the elderly people feel their lives losing meaning for being at home all days. In addition, they feel lonely, especially without their children around. In order to solve these problem, I think we should encourage them to communicate with others as much as possible.
ChenCheng: In fact, there are some other elderly people still working after retirement, not for money, but to show their value.
Jian an: Thats the question. People must find something interest to do themselves, such as reading, baking, drawing, flower arrangement. They should not just be a babysitter.
ChenCheng: That is what we can do to help them. Except for money, we can help them to find something interest. We should take care of our children on ourselves, freeing our parents.
Jian an: I think some elder women may have found their interest, who dancing in the square. But fewer elder men would do that. Maybe they like to play chess. We can help them.
ChenCheng: After all, no one really wants to be old, and perhaps all like to be young forever.

Jian an: Hi, ChenCheng, Good morning.
ChenCheng: Hi, Jian an, Good morning. What did you do last weekend?
Jian an: Hum, I went to some beautiful place with my friends and played shuttle cock with other friends.
ChenCheng: Oh, Seems you have so many friends. So what kinds of qualities do you look for in your friends?
Jian an: I like people who are open and friendly. Those people are usually more active and fun to be with. I like spending time with them. Sometimes we go outside or play sports together. What about you?
ChenCheng: I dont like to make friends with people who is not honest. I think honesty is very important to me.
Jian an: I think its important to most people. Normally, the problem is that you can only find it out whether someone is honest or not by getting to know them.
ChenCheng: you can find it out from their friends. As the saying goes, birds of a feather flocks together.
Jian an: If you know any friends of them, you cant rely on your friends to introduce people to you all the time. You have to go out and make the first move sometimes. Also, I like the funny people. How about you?
ChenCheng: Yes, I do. Funny guys can make the atmosphere lively during a party. They can also draw you out when you are depressed. But sometimes they dont seem to take things seriously. You will never know whether they are joking or serious.
Jian an: oh, sometimes its hard to tell, but if you know the person fairly well, you can usually tell from their expression about what they are really talking.
ChenCheng: Maybe it will work. Thanks for your advice. In my opinion, the most important quality in friendship is keeping words. I also will help my friends to get out of trouble. Do you think so?
Jianan: Of course. I will give my hands if necessary. How do you treat your friends? Do you visit your friend without invitation ?
ChenCheng: Sometimes. And I always keep open house for my friends, too. They quite enjoy themselves in my house. We all have the same character, same interests.
We will argue when we have different opinions on some events, keeping our opinion at the end of the argument. But it cant hurt our relationship.
Jian an: So do I. In fact, it also share our ideas. I also want to make friends with some people whose personality is very prominent.
ChenCheng: Nor am I. But why we become good friends? Haha
Jian an: Yes. Maybe people dont like to have friends that are all same. Most people like a little variety in their lives----including a variety of characteristics in their friends.
